2019 10oz Silver Kookaburra Coin

The 2019 Kookaburra is the latest offering from The Perth Mint in its Kookaburra range which started in 1990. This is a brand new silver coin. Coins are packed individually in protective plastic capsules, with bulk orders in boxes of 25.

Each coin is 10oz of 999.9 fine silver and has a face value of A$10.

The obverse of this coin contains the Ian Rank-Broadley fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is an interestingly nostalgic contrast to the current Royal Mint coins which feature Jody Clark’s 5th portrait.

The reverse contains a design by Neil Hollis of a flying kookaburra against a backdrop of the moon.

Also shown are the words ‘AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA’, the year-date, the coin’s weight and finesse. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark is also featured on the coin.

Our Expert Opinion

The sheer weight and size of this coin is impressive. Not only does that provide a tactile satisfaction not usually afforded in far smaller gold coins, but it means the coin is a cost effective way of investing in silver. The large stature of the coin reduces the relative production cost, giving the buyer more silver for their money when compared to smaller 1oz silver coins.

The Perth Mint are well respected in the precious metals world for producing excellent quality coins, so these coins are always liquid and easy to sell. Investment values are further boosted from the collectors community who love these coins for their constantly evolving designs and true refection of the Australian nation.

If you’re looking at buying a large quantity of coins, or building a substantial holding over the years, then it’s worth contemplating combining these coins with UK coins which have the advantage of being Capital Gains Tax free. This may not be relevant for small amounts of silver or if you intend selling strategically over the years, but we always believe that variety is the spice….. For outright value, you can consider buying silver Britannias, or if you like the idea of limited issue coins as part of a series, then the Silver lunar coins are also popular.
