2024 Beowulf and Grendel Myths & Legends 1oz Silver coin

This is a brand new 1oz silver bullion coin to launch the first coin of a third Myths & Legends 3-coin collectible mini-series. This series focussing on the story of Beowulf follows on from the success of the Royal Mint’s first and second Myths & Legends collections. Celebrating the legend of Robin Hood, series one consisted of coins adorned by Robin Hood himself, Maid Marion and Little John. The second series focussed on the fable of King Arthur and the round table, showcasing the King Arthur 1oz silver coin, Merlin 1oz silver coin, and and the subsequent Morgan Le Fay bullion coin.

Each coin is minted to 999 purity silver, containing 1 troy ounce of 24-carat silver. Coins will arrive in official tubes for orders in multiples of ten. Like the other 1oz silver coins in the series, the Morgan coin possesses a face value of £2, qualifying the coin as legal tender – meaning any profits made when selling the coins in the future are completely free from Capital Gains Tax. The Royal Mint has produced these coins to bullion finish, deeming them ideal for investment due to their lower production cost.

Beowulf and Grendel 1oz Silver Coin

As the first of the 3-coin series, the coin reverse designed by renowned artist David Lawrence features the main character Beowulf and his first enemy, the swamp monster Grendel in a ferocious battle. The obverse features the latest official portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings.

Beowulf

Beowulf is the protagonist of the Old English epic poem named after him, one of the earliest known works in English literature. The poem tells the story of Beowulf, a hero of the Geats (a North Germanic tribe in what is now Sweden), who comes to the aid of Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, whose great hall, Heorot, is plagued by the monster Grendel. Beowulf slays Grendel and then Grendel’s mother, earning the gratitude and rewards of Hrothgar. Later in life, Beowulf becomes king of the Geats and, in his old age, faces and defeats a dragon, but is mortally wounded in the battle. The poem ends with his funeral rites and a lament. Beowulf is celebrated for his bravery, strength, and leadership, and the poem explores themes of heroism, loyalty, and the struggle between good and evil.

Grendel

Grendel is one of the three antagonists (along with Grendel’s mother and the dragon) in the epic poem Beowulf. Grendel is depicted as a monstrous creature with human qualities, who terrorizes the hall of Heorot, killing and eating Hrothgar’s warriors. The poem describes him as a descendant of Cain (the biblical figure cursed for the murder of his brother Abel), which associates him with both human sinfulness and monstrous ferocity. Grendel’s attacks are portrayed as a feud against the Danish people, motivated by jealousy and anger over their joy and music, which he, being cursed and exiled, can never enjoy. His battle with Beowulf ends in Grendel’s defeat and death, which leads to further conflict when Grendel’s mother seeks revenge. Grendel’s character raises questions about the nature of evil, the complexities of vengeance, and the boundaries between human and monster.
