History and mintage

Fractional Britannias have been minted alongside the full one-ounce version since its inception in 1987. The Britannia quarter ounce, along with the half ounce and tenth ounce versions are issued in both bullion coin and proof versions in various mintage levels from, varying from year to year. A general rule of thumb is that the fractional versions of the Britannia are issued in far lower quantities than the one-ounce coin, ultimately making them scarcer. The idea of having a one-ounce gold coin and three smaller fractions as not a new one. Infact, the Royal Mint copied the successful strategy of the Rand Mint who produced the Krugerrand a full 20 years previously. The popularity of these coins is due to the fact that their gold content is easily measured in ounces (as opposed to the 0.2354 ounce contained in a Sovereign!), and it provides good value and is measurable versus the spot gold price. The coin also benefits from updated designs virtually every year. This makes the coins collectable from year to year, as well as collectable with their other fractions. Various versions of the iconic Britannia symbol include a seated version, close up, and chariot versions.

Our Expert Opinion

The Britannia quarter-ounce gold coin is an excellent alternative to the ever-popular Sovereign coin. While the Sovereign contains 0.2354 ounces of gold, the Quarter Britannia contains a more straightforward 0.25 ounce. So size-wise, the coins are very similar indeed. Being in lower mintages, the Britannia 1/4 oz is rarer than most Sovereigns and so may cost a higher premium to purchase, but will generally also fetch more upon sale, especially with the various designs adding to their desirability (while the Sovereign doesn’t change from year to year). We sometimes obtain proof versions of this coin, which we offer at the same price as the more standard bullion version, so these should be snapped up when available. Due to their relatively short time since launch, there are less second-hand Britannias on the market than older coins such as the Victoria Sovereign. Most buyers, tend to buy and hold as part of a long-term investment strategy. If buying a number of coins for investment, the Quarter Britannia is recommended due to its tax-free gold status and small size with a reasonable premium. It combines well with the larger 1oz Britannia, along with some of the older Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns to provide some degree of numismatic value.
