Victoria Young Head Half Sovereign gold coin (shield back)

These coins can be any year from this period or varying grades, depending on stock levels. You may wish to consider the accompanying Half Sovereign coin capsules.

The obverse of the Victoria Young Head Half Sovereign features Queen Victoria in her early years, with her hair up in a bun – the reason why this William Wyon portrait is commonly referred to as Victoria bun head.

This highly collectible coin features the relatively rare ‘Shield Back’ emblem on its reverse by renowned designer J.B.Merlen . This depicts the Ensigns Armorials and garnished shield. These coins are far scarcer than Sovereigns with George & the Dragon on the back due to lower mintages and many being removed from circulation.

In 1887, the reverse of Sovereigns started to feature a new design of the classic St.George and Dragon by Benedetto Pistucci.

The coins will date between 1838-1887.

Our Expert Opinion

The Victoria Young Head Half Sovereign features the sought-after shield back design on the reverse. Combined with the coin’s age, it’s ideally suited to collector’s and those seeking long term investment. You may also consider coins from other periods such as the Edward Half Sovereign and the George V Gold Sovereign.
