Gold ¼ oz Dragon Beast Coin
This 2017 coin is another addition to the Queen’s Beast series issued by The Royal Mint to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II surpassing Queen Victoria as our longest reigning Monarch.
This is a bullion finish coin, issued by the Royal Mint. Coins will be packaged loose for small quantities and orders of 25 or more may come in Royal Mint tubes.
If you’d like to further protect your coins, we offer coin capsules which fit perfectly.
Struck in ¼ oz of fine (999.9) gold and with a face value of £25, this is the third release based on the set of 10 beasts sculpted by James Woodford RA for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
The obverse of this coin contains the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.
The reverse of this 2017 coin contains the Jody Clark designed Celtic dragon. It’s quite unusual for the Royal Mint to commission the same designer for both sides of a coin, but they’ve been rewarded with their faith in Jody Clark for the entire Queens Beasts series, with a wonderful feeling of consistency with the coins.
The dragon is said to represent sovereignty and power.
Our expert opinion
The queen’s beasts 1oz coins proved very popular with their combination of investment and collectible appeal. The quarter ounce versions are delightful as they are just miniature versions of the larger coins with lovely detail of the heraldic beasts. Being smaller makes the coin affordable to more people, and it offers a direct alternative to the ever-popular gold Sovereign coins which weigh near to a quarter ounce.
Their diminutive size lends itself to flexibility, granting the owner the choice to sell small parts of their holding rather than be stuck with one large piece of gold. Demand for the coin is high from those motivated to own all ten of the Queen’s Beasts coins and we’d expect values of the Dragon beasts to increase quicker than for standard coins. As the years pass, the coins will become scarce and therefore rarer.
The coins are struck to bullion to quality, ensuring a shiny finish without the additional cost of a proof finish. The face value of the coin is essential in its appeal to the investment community. This qualifies the coin as legal tender in the UK, and as such, any profits gained from selling the coin are deemed tax free.
