2023 Merlin Myths & Legends 1oz Silver coin
This is a brand new 1oz silver bullion coin and is the 2nd coin of the Royal Mint’s second Myths & Legends 3-coin collectible mini-series. It follows the popular release of the King Arthur 1oz silver coin.
Continuing the enduring legend of King Arthur, the second coin in the series features arguably the best known character of the fable, King Arthur’s advisor and sorcerer Merlin. First created by 12th-century British author Geoffrey of Monmouth, Merlin represented an amalgamation of several historic figures. The legend suggests he was born from a mortal mother and an incubus father (male demon). This union created an offspring with magical powers and abilities.
The King Arthur series of coins follows on from the success of the Mint’s first Myths & Legends collection. These coins celebrated the legend of Robin Hood, with coins adorned by Robin Hood himself, Maid Marion and Little John. These coins are a must have for any collector.
Each coin is minted to 999 purity silver, containing 1 troy ounce of 24-carat silver. Coins will arrive in official tubes for orders in multiples of ten. Like the other 1oz silver coins in the series, the King Arthur coin possesses a face value of £2, qualifying the coin as legal tender – meaning any profits made when selling the coins in the future are completely free from Capital Gains Tax. The Royal Mint has produced these coins to bullion finish, deeming them ideal for investment due to their lower production cost.

On the coin’s reverse, Merlin is seen wielding a magic stave, a representation of his strong magical abilities, in the coin’s eye-catching design. A golden sickle sits on his head band, which is typically used for the holy act of cutting mistletoe. A wise owl, a symbol of the wisdom that led King Arthur and his warriors, is perched on Merlin’s shoulder. The renowned Glastonbury Tor, thought to have served as the model for the fabled island of Avalon, looms in the background, strengthening the coin’s link to the enthralling Arthurian legends.
The obverse now features the latest official portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings. The first coin in the series displayed the Queen Elizabeth II portrait, familiar since 2015.
Our Expert Opinion
